The aging process remains one of the biggest challenges in the biological sciences. Since the advent of recorded human history, we know that countless generations have sought to develop medicines to control it’s outcome.

Aging lies at the core of every age-related disease and affects every person on the planet. It represents an unbearable toll on the economies of the developed countries resulting in over two trillion dollars in direct medical costs, costs of caring and lost productivity in the US and EU alone. Yet, pharmaceutical companies fail to see the practical applications of aging research as many early experiments with drugs that held promise in slowing the aging processes resulted in commercial failures and write offs.

Lack of business models, regulation and absence of a clear set of aging biomarkers make it difficult for large pharmaceutical companies to fully engage in aging research. Unlike other events that are geared towards academia or have a broad range of topics, this forum intends to focus on drug discovery and pharmaceuticals that may have a role in postponing the aging processes, preventing the age-related diseases and evaluating the effectiveness of various small molecules with geroprotective properties.

The event will showcase the research projects in aging research to the leaders of the pharmaceutical industry. The symposium will comprise into the three sessions relevant to the drug discovery companies. Each session will be chaired by the top expert in the field:

Few words about WCE. It is the first attendee-centered meeting on endometriosis. The first World Congress on Endometriosis was organised in 1986 in Clermont-Ferrand.

WCE 2014 provided a unique opportunity of concentrating into a four days the updated knowledge, the biological findings, and the global research perspectives on an enigmatic chronic condition affecting millions of young women and adversely impacting on fertility and health-related quality of life.
The accumulation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) and of mineral deposits both result in increased stiffness of connective tissue, impair homeostasis and contribute to a broad range of age-related diseases. Through comprehensive bioinformatic analysis of the many molecular processes involved in mineralization, Zhavoronkov's team have identified possible molecular interventions.
Rigdon Lentz talk was called "Apheresis of TNF and IL-2 disrupts tumor immunoevasion". TNF and IL-2 are known to ba pro-inflammatory cytokines produced by activated mononuclear white blood cells. These cells link up tumor cells via specific receptors. Connecting of cytokines (TNF and IL-2) and these receptors leads to cell death by apoptosis and oxidative stress. At the same time tumor cells can produce such soluble receptors for TNF and IL-2 as sTNF-R1, sTNF-R2 and sIL-2 and this fact is most likely to be a main mechanism by which tumor cells could block and avoid attack of immune system. Rigdon proposed the extracorporeal removal of these inhibitors via apheresis device. I was impressed by outcome of this study: metastatic patients who receive multiple treatment cycles and have clinical symptoms of tumor inflammation further show X-ray and CT signs of tumor necrosis and reduction!

Todd Rider was talking about new approach in antiviral therapeutics. Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) Activated Caspase Oligomerizer (DRACO) could selectively induce provoke apoptosis in cells containing viral dsRNA without killing uninfected cells. Furthermore, it was demonstrated in mice that DRACO quickly penetrate into all organs, persist for over 24 hours and are nontoxic. DRACO was demonstrated as very effective against 15 different viruses, including H1N1 influenza, Tacaribe arenavirus, Amapari arenavirus and Guama bunyavirus.

We met very interesting poster at the poster-session and got to know one of the authors of it - Stuart Calimport. The Human Memome Project was made with aim to identify socio-cultural markers of longevity. Our team is studying an
endometriosis disease. Nowadays endometriosis is considered as an incurable illness.
It has a great variety of etiology and pathogenesis theories. Doctors and
scientists still cannot say surely what is the reason of appearing endometriosis in women
of reproductive age. Within the framework of our project “The regulation of endometriosis”
we are studying endometriosis in concrete patient, carrying out a full diagnostics and
hope to find the right target for the selection of therapy.

Personal approach is that we
want to attract women with endometriosis. Each case is individual and can have different
symptoms and passing. It is necessary not only to examine each patient from the point of
settled guidelines but also to correct them on depends of particular qualities of passing of
endometriosis in each woman.
